Now that it’s officially spring, which means summer vacation is just around the corner! Our cabins in Oregon are one of the best places to stay in Central Oregon, especially with the whole family in town. Our newly designed waterfront resort is perched on the edges of the Gilchrist Log Pod. We’re only minutes from some of Oregon’s best hiking trails and national parks—including Crater Lake National Park and the Deschutes National Forest.
One of the most popular destinations, Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon, is home to the deepest lake in the United States. It was formed over 7,000 years ago after the collapse of Mount Mazama. The lake’s striking blue color and incredible clarity make it a breathtaking centerpiece surrounded by cliffs, forests, and dramatic volcanic formations. With its unique geologic history and stunning alpine scenery, Crater Lake is a must-see destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers, and only 20 minutes from our resort.
While there are camping options at Crater Lake, if you’re traveling with small kids or prefer a warm bed and a roof over your head at night, the Historic Gilchrist Resort is the perfect place to stay. Our charming cabins in Oregon are all designed to be your home away from home as you explore all the best things to do in the area. We also offer a lovely list of on-site amenities, including a heated lap pool, hot tubs, yard games, and so much more. Book one of our cabins in Oregon today!
Cabins in Oregon: Hikes at Crater Lake
While you’ll find plenty to do at our resort in Central Oregon, one of the biggest draws to the area is Crater Lake National Park. This historic natural wonder offers astounding views of this vibrant blue lake surrounded by rugged forests and pretty meadows, which are awash in wildflowers in the proper season. Visitors can drive the scenic Rim Drive, hike along dozens of trails, and take a boat tour to Wizard Island.
Here are the best hikes at Crater Lake National Park:
- Cleetwood Cove Trail: This 2.2-mile round-trip hike is the only trail providing access to the lake’s edge. It’s steep on the way back up, but the reward is swimming in Crater Lake or boarding a boat to Wizard Island (seasonal). It is best for active families with older kids.
- Garfield Peak Trail: At 3.6 miles round-trip, this moderate hike begins near Crater Lake Lodge and climbs to one of the park’s best panoramic viewpoints. The trail offers breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscape. It is suitable for families with older children who can handle elevation gain.
- Discovery Point: This easy 2-mile round-trip trail starts at Rim Village and follows the edge of the caldera, offering continuous views of Crater Lake. It’s mostly flat and accessible but may still be a little tricky for families with small kids.
- Watchman Peak Trail: This short but rewarding 1.6-mile round-trip trail leads to a historic fire lookout with one of the best views of Wizard Island. It’s a popular hike during sunset and is doable for families with kids who can manage a bit of uphill climbing.
- Annie Creek Canyon Trail: A quieter, 1.7-mile loop trail that descends into a forested canyon with a flowing creek and seasonal wildflowers. Located near Mazama Village, this moderate trail is a pleasant nature walk for families wanting to escape the crowds.
- Plaikni Falls Trail: A leisurely stroll through a forest to a waterfall fed by snowmelt offers a beautiful view of wildflowers. Listen for pikas, marmots, and songbirds when the trail bends to the right.
After a lovely day exploring Crater Lake, you’ll love to return to our comfortable cabins in Oregon!
