Historical Background of Gilchrist Mill

Founding of the Mill

The Gilchrist Mill was founded in 1938 by the Gilchrist family. Frank W. Gilchrist, along with his family, moved their lumbering business from Michigan to Oregon. They founded the mill to take advantage of the vast timber resources in the Pacific Northwest. The mill was set up to process timber into lumber, which was in high demand for construction and manufacturing.

The family established the town of Gilchrist around the mill, making it one of the last company towns in the United States. They provided housing, schools, and recreational facilities for the workers, creating a tight-knit community. And now you can stay at our cabins in Oregon near this historic site.
