Water Safety Guidellines
Water Safety Guidelines for Recreation at Historic Gilchrist Waterfront Resort
At Historic Gilchrist Waterfront Resort, your safety is our top priority. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, we ask that all guests adhere to the following water safety guidelines:
General Guidelines
No glass around pools or hot tubs
When pond frozen, stay off due to thin ice!
Supervision: Children under 14 must be supervised by an adult at all times when near or in the water.
Swimming Proficiency: Only swim in designated areas if you are a confident swimmer. If unsure of your swimming abilities, please stay in shallow water.
Swimming Alone: Never swim alone. Always use the buddy system, even if you’re an experienced swimmer. Alcohol & Swimming: Refrain from consuming alcohol before or during water activities. Alcohol impairs judgment and increases the risk of accidents.
Life Jackets: Wear a life jacket when participating in boating or water sports. Nonswimmers and children should wear life jackets near the water’s edge.
Weather Awareness: Pay attention to weather conditions. If you see lightning or hear thunder, immediately exit the water and seek shelter.
Health & Hygiene: Avoid swimming if you have open wounds, are feeling unwell, or have a contagious condition.
Specific Activity Guidelines
Swimming Areas: Only swim in designated swimming areas marked by buoys or signs. Avoid diving in shallow water or unfamiliar areas to prevent injury. Respect the swimming boundaries and do not venture into restricted zones.
Boating: Ensure your boat is equipped with all required safety gear, including life jackets, flares, and a whistle. Do not overload the boat with passengers or equipment beyond its capacity. Stay clear of swimmers and maintain a safe distance from the shore. Familiarize yourself with boating regulations and speed limits in the area.
Fishing: Cast your line in designated fishing zones only. Keep fishing gear away from swimming and boating areas. Be mindful of others when handling hooks and fishing equipment.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Wear a life jacket at all times. Stick to designated areas for these activities, away from swimmers and motorized boats. Be aware of the currents and tides before setting out.
Emergency Procedures
Rescue Stations: Familiarize yourself with the location of rescue stations, lifebuoys, and first aid kits.
Emergency Contacts: Keep emergency contact numbers handy, including the resort’s emergency hotline. In Case of Emergency: If you witness someone in distress, do not attempt a direct rescue unless you are trained. Instead, use a lifebuoy, call for help, and notify the nearest staff member immediately.
Respect Nature & Wildlife
Marine Life: Avoid touching or disturbing marine life. Some species can be harmful if handled improperly.
Environment: Dispose of trash properly and keep the waterfront clean. Never leave glass bottles or sharp objects near the water.
Thank you for following these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at Historic Gilchrist Waterfront Resort.
Hot Tub and Lap Pool Safety Guidelines
To ensure a safe and relaxing experience at the Historic Gilchrist Waterfront Resort, we kindly ask all guests to follow these safety guidelines when using our hot tub and lap pool facilities.
General Guidelines
No glass around pools or hot tubs
Supervision: Children under 14 must be supervised by an adult at all times in the hot tub and lap pool areas.
Health Restrictions: Guests with certain health conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, or pregnancy, should consult a doctor before using the hot tub. Avoid using the hot tub or lap pool if you have open wounds or contagious conditions.
Time Limits: Limit your time in the hot tub to 15 minutes at a time to avoid overheating. Take breaks if you wish to use the hot tub for an extended period.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water before and after using the hot tub to stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol consumption while using the hot tub.
No Diving: Diving is strictly prohibited in the hot tub and lap pool due to shallow water depth.
Running: Do not run or engage in horseplay around the hot tub and lap pool areas to prevent slips and falls.
Hot Tub Guidelines
Temperature Awareness: The hot tub water temperature should not exceed 104°F (40°C). If the temperature feels too hot, exit the tub immediately.
Entering and Exiting: Use caution when entering and exiting the hot tub, as surfaces may be slippery. Use the handrails provided for support.
Children in Hot Tub: Children under 5 should not use the hot tub. Older children must be closely supervised and should spend only short periods in the hot tub.
Electronic Devices: Keep electronic devices away from the hot tub to avoid electrical hazards.
Lap Pool Guidelines
Resting: If you need to rest, please move to the side of the pool to allow other swimmers to pass.
Floating Devices: Only use personal floatation devices, kickboards, or other equipment in the lap pool if it does not interfere with other swimmers.
Emergency Procedures
Emergency Exits: Familiarize yourself with the location of emergency exits, first aid kits, and rescue equipment.
In Case of Emergency: If you experience dizziness, nausea, or any discomfort while using the hot tub or lap pool, exit immediately and seek assistance from a staff member.
Rescue Protocol: If you witness an emergency, do not attempt a direct rescue unless trained. Instead, use a reaching or throwing assist and notify resort staff immediately.
Respect for Others

Bike Riding
Basic Safety Guidelines
General Safety
Wear a Helmet: Always wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head in case of falls or accidents.
Check Your Bike: Before riding, ensure your bike is in good condition. Check the brakes, tires, and chain regularly.
Wear Visible Clothing: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially when riding at dawn, dusk, or night, to make sure you’re visible to others.
Use Lights and Reflectors: Equip your bike with front and rear lights, and use reflectors to enhance visibility in low-light conditions.
Riding Safety
Follow Traffic Rules: Obey all traffic signals, signs, and road markings. Ride in the same direction as traffic and use bike lanes where available.
Stay Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings. Watch for cars, pedestrians, and other cyclists, and be prepared to react to unexpected situations.
Use Hand Signals: Signal your turns and stops to alert drivers and other cyclists of your intentions. Extend your left arm out for a left turn, and your right arm out for a right turn. Signal a stop by pointing your hand downward.
Ride Single File: When riding with others, stay in a single file, especially on busy roads, to avoid obstructing traffic.
Avoid Distractions: Don’t use your phone, listen to music, or do anything that takes your attention away from the road while riding.
Road Safety
Be Aware of Blind Spots: Stay out of drivers’ blind spots, especially at intersections or when passing large vehicles like buses or trucks.
Yield to Pedestrians: Always give pedestrians the right of way, especially at crosswalks and on shared paths.
Cross at Intersections Safely: When crossing intersections, look both ways and proceed with caution. Walk your bike across busy intersections if necessary.
Ride Predictably: Avoid sudden moves and maintain a steady course so that drivers can anticipate your actions.
Avoid Riding on Sidewalks: In most places, riding on sidewalks is illegal and unsafe for both cyclists and pedestrians. Stick to the road or designated bike paths.
Environmental Safety
Avoid Bad Weather: Avoid riding in poor weather conditions like heavy rain, fog, or snow, which can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
Be Cautious on Wet Roads: If you must ride in the rain, slow down and be extra cautious, especially when turning or stopping.
Watch for Hazards: Be on the lookout for potholes, gravel, glass, and other hazards that could cause you to lose control of your bike.
Respect for Others
Share the Road: Respect other road users, including drivers, pedestrians, and fellow cyclists. Stay in your lane and be courteous.
Pass Safely: When overtaking others, pass on the left and announce your presence with a bell or a polite call, such as “On your left.”
Following these safety rules will help ensure a safe and enjoyable biking experience for everyone.
